Paper Shredding FAQs

Can I put my old CDs, DVDs and USB drives in with the paper?

Shred-it asks that all media items including floppy disks, hard drives and electrical equipment are stored separately in the correct containers, ready for the secure destruction and recycling process. Our hard drive destruction and media destruction services will be able to securely destroy all of the necessary data.

Can shredded paper be recycled?

Yes, shredded paper can be recycled. All the paper we securely shred is processed and baled and then categorised into two grades for market purposes – either sorted office waste (SOW) or coloured heavy letter (CHL). Shredded paper is recycled by being sent to a tissue mill which produces household and business products, while the CHL grade is sent to paper mills which produce pulp and recycled high-grade paper. Find out more in our guide to How to Reduce Your Company's Carbon Footprint.

Can you shred newspaper in a paper shredder?

Yes, you can shred newspaper in a paper shredder. But there are also many other ways to recycle newspaper. You can simply place an old newspaper in your recycling bin at home, or newspapers will also break down inside a properly built compost pile and provide the necessary carbon for the decomposition process. See how confidential destruction works hand-in-hand with recycling in our guide to Shredding Paper and the Environment.

Do I have to remove paper clips before shredding?

No, you do not have to remove paper clips before shredding. All you need to do is put the documents into the locked consoles we provide and you’re all set. You don't have to worry about removing anything else, not paper clips, staples or even binder clips. Our shredders can handle that.

Do I need to sort the paper?

How often can you service our office?

Shred-it provide a wide range of service options to suit your requirements. For businesses dealing with document overflow or less frequent needs, our one-off document destruction service is the best way to deal with office clear-outs. But the most common services are weekly, fortnightly and monthly as many customers chose a regular service to ensure compliance with the GDPR. Don’t hesitate to get in touch so our sales team can advise on the service best suited to your business needs.

What happens to paper after it has been shredded?

After the paper has been securely shredded, it is securely recycled. This process requires shredded paper being processed and baled and then categorised into two grades for market purposes – either sorted office waste or coloured heavy letter. Sorted office waste is sent to a tissue mill which produces household and business products. Coloured heavy letter is sent to paper mills that produce pulp and recycled high-grade paper.

What types of documents should I be shredding?

At Shred-it, we recommend a Shred-it All Policy. The only way to make sure confidential documents don’t end up in the wrong hands is to destroy them. By implementing a Shred-it All Policy, you remove the responsibility placed on employees and remove the risk of a data breach, especially as human error is the number one of the most common causes of security breaches.

Where is my paper shredded?

Once we have collected your paper-based information in our specialist locked consoles we securely transport the paper to our central Shredding facility via our GPS-tracked fleets. Here, your paper is securely shredded, before being sorted into office waste (SOW) or coloured heavy letter (CHL) and securely recycled.
